Any sliver of hope for lefty Caleb Ferguson to miraculously pitch again this season was squashed on Thursday when Dave Roberts provided the latest update. Speaking with the media on Thursday, Doc said that the 24-year-old will, in fact, undergo reconstructive surgery on his pitching elbow. It will be the second Tommy John of his life.
I think surgery is imminent and I would expect it to be some time next week.
It’s a devastating blow for Ferguson who is having a fine year here in his third major league campaign. In 21 appearances, he’s posted a 2-1 record with a 2.89 ERA and 9-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio in 18.2 innings pitched. Despite the bad news, Roberts said the Ohio native took the news as best as he could.
