The Baseball 100: No. 61, Arky Vaughan (The Athletic)

Starting in December and ending on Opening Day, Joe Posnanski will count down the 100 greatest baseball players by publishing an essay on a player every day for 100 days. In all, this project will contain roughly as many words as “Moby Dick.” Yes, we know it’s nutty. We hope you enjoy. 

Through the years, I’ve tried several times to answer a seemingly simple question: Who is the least-known great player in baseball history? I’ve tried various polls, surveyed many baseball fans I know, etc. I’ve had a theory about it, one that obviously relates directly to today’s featured player, Arky Vaughan, whom there is a reasonable chance you don’t know.

In any case, I tried another method. I created a survey with 60 players, some of them all-time greats, some of them obscure Hall of Famers (who were not, in my view, all-time greats), some of them good players who are not in the Hall, some of them regular old baseball players you…
