The Baseball 100: No. 65, Ernie Banks (The Athletic)

Starting in December and ending on Opening Day, Joe Posnanski will count down the 100 greatest baseball players by publishing an essay on a player every day for 100 days. In all, this project will contain roughly as many words as “Moby Dick.” Yes, we know it’s nutty. We hope you enjoy. 

There’s something, dare I say it, sacred about the perfect combination of a great player and a legendary quote. Think of Muhammad Ali and “I am the greatest.” Think of Lou Gehrig and “Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Think of Joe Namath and “We’re going to win the game, I guarantee it.” Think of Satchel Paige saying “Don’t look back. Something might be gaining on you.”

These are a few words that somehow capture the essence of a player, of a moment, of that little bit of magic that makes someone unforgettable. It doesn’t always have to be sweeping. It could be John Kruk saying, “I ain’t no athlete, I’m…
