The Tigers are “closing in” on a deal with catcher Austin Romine, per George A. King III of the New York Post (via Twitter). It’s a one-year deal worth $4.1MM, per MLB.com’s Jason Beck (Twitter link) and Evan Woodberry of MLive.com (via Twitter).
Romine, 31, has been a steady contributor to the Yankees for some time now. While he was the clear number two in New York, he got a good bit of action in recent years when Gary Sanchez was sidelined.
Though he carried a dismal track record with the bat until recently, Romine has trended up in the past two seasons. Since the start of the 2018 season, though, he carries a solid .262/.302/.428 batting line with 18 long balls in 505 plate appearances.
