Gerrit Cole has worn No. 45 throughout his major league career, but he may have to pay up to keep it when he joins the Yankees.
After the right-hander agreed to a record nine-year, $324 million deal late Tuesday night, Luke Voit joked on Twitter that Cole could have some competition for the number he wore in both Pittsburgh and Houston.
“@GerritCole45 Hey the number 45 jersey fits really weird and runs really big,’’ Voit, whose worn 45 in his two seasons with the Yankees after wearing No. 40 with the Cardinals, wrote on Wednesday. “[It’s] not a problem that you will want to worry about for 9 years, so I’ll take care of it! #congratsman #letsget28”
Clearly, Voit — whose second half was marred by a core muscle injury that led to him being left off the postseason roster and offseason surgery — is more focused on winning a title than his jersey number.
Voit underwent surgery following the season to repair the injury, which surfaced in the middle of the season and sapped much of his power.
